Additionaly every single profit will be donated to a charity organisation supporting Kids. This time we support UP_FOUNDATION, promoting Design for Change. The Round Table is a non-profit association expressing the key ideas of our time, namely the desire for progress and peace. It is a rich and varied sample of individuals for whom it aims to provide a forum for growth and friendship. The association is constantly looking for young, active and dynamic members, who are rich in heart and willing to break away from prejudices. The local club involved in this project is Round Table Luxembourg Nr2, based in Esch-sur-Alzette.

Probably not many will be reading this section as Sumo is well known in and out of Luxembourg.

If not, here’s a peak into his biography:
Sumo’s work can be seen all around Luxembourg, but also in numerous cities around the world to which the artist has travelled at one point or another in recent years. Although an important, formative stage in his artistic development, graffiti and street art are merely one aspect of Sumo’s bulimic work on images.

While Crazy Baldhead, the emblematic character he developed in the late 90s, also dominates his paintings, here, he no longer acts as a signature or a sign of appropriation of a given urban ’territory’. A pictorial motif in its own right, he becomes a pretext for extended formal investigations and variations.

Bursting with statements, slogans, motifs and intense colours, Sumo’s compositions represent an abstract documentation of moments. His overall concept of time and space fills the picture plane in a sprawling, virus-like mode. Thanks to these countless details, each square centimetre could be seen as an autonomous work in itself, their sum creating a dizzying zoom-in, zoom-out effect.

The artist was nicknamed Sumo back in high school, well before he turned to graffiti; today, he hardly ever uses his birth name, whether privately or professionally. The nickname is therefore much more than a pseudonym for the artist whose real name is Christian Pearson.

Design for change is a global movement that cultivates the “I can” mindset in every child by providing a 4 step framework:

  • FEEL – empathy – nurture the heart
  • IMAGINE- ethics – grow the head
  • DO – excellence – use the hands collaborative action and agency
  • SHARE – elevation – inspire hope – I can , now you can too!

With this framework Design for change empowers children and young people to carry out projects of general interest on the basis of problems they have identified themselves.

UP_Foundation brought this global movement to Luxembourg.

Gilles Simon, the owner of Minett Customs, proposed to take care of the printing of the masks, even without profit! He donated a good amount of energy into this project and we would like to thank him for supporting this great cause!
